Baking and Covering

This was the baking phase. I had to bake four different cakes (lemon flavor) that would eventually turn into two layers on the finished project. This part is pretty boring. I followed the recipe off the box, added some cake filler(extra eggs, flour, etc) to make the recipe go further and presto chango, there was cake. I got a little worried while cooking because it took much longer than the box said to get the cake baked and not have it be a gooey mess. Eventually it all worked out though and I came to the realization that I needed to chill out just a bit, everything was going to be fine and in the end it really was fine.

Above are the videos that I took while practicing and completing the covering layer of fondant on the cake.
You can see that I gouged a giant hole in the side when I tried to cut off the excess fondant on this top layer, apparently getting to close to a cake with a pizza cutter is a bad idea. I attempted to fix the hole, which doesn't look great I know, but I didn't really know how to fix it. I decided I would try and cover the mistake with decoration later on. Thankfully the trees and flower decorations covered the damage and made it almost impossible to see. While it turned out all right I did have a bit of a heart attack when it first happened,

Here are the two finished layers completely covered and about to be put together. Each layer of cake sits on a cake board (basically a cardboard circle) which allows you to pick up and move the different layers.
Here are the two layers stacked together. To help support the weight of the top layer without smashing the bottom, I had to insert dowel rods (wooden rods, you can see in the above picture to the right of the cakes) which take the weight of the upper layer. I also added that darker green layer around the base to not only add effect but also to help cover up the fact that I couldn't cut straight and the bottom of each layer didn't look all that great. Yay for cover ups!
